Went up there and hiked the 3.7 mile loop with a friend on Wednesday. They are going to permanently close the trail to the public on May 1st. Too many idiots getting themselves injured or killed.
I got to walk behind one of the falls. It was very loud.
Near the top of the falls:
The loop back was decidedly less watery.
The remnants of an abandoned railroad tunnel and bridge:
Going through the tunnel:
What used to be the bridge span, from the end of the tunnel two pics up:
And of course, it wouldn’t be Oppo if there wasn’t an obligatory truck pic.
Really love those hub caps.

It is a shame that they're closing that trail, but I understand why. I used to hike that trail a few times a year and there would always be people there who seemed ill-equipped for the hike. Plenty of people in sneakers or flip flops, which is dangerous on that trail if you aren't careful.

Yeah, it’s no joke. Some parts of it are more climbing than hiking.

Still, I never thought it was so deadly it needed to be closed when I was hiking it. And I'm a fat dude, so it's not like I'm in great physical shape for hiking.

Law of averages, it’s only a problem because it’s so popular.
My dad was an avid hiker back in the 70s and he knew a guy who told him about this trail before it was publicized. Was a much different atmosphere back then. I might be able to scrounge up some photos of the area from back then.

That would be cool to see.
Maybe one of these days we'll run into each other around Allentown. I have a friend who lives up on the top of the mountain near the WFMZ station. I'm guessing you aren't too far from there. I still might be interested in your offer to go riding sometime, but I think I need to lose a few pounds first (and learn how to ride a motorcycle).

“you are responsible for your own safety”
It’s a shame they couldn’t have just left it at that. Kind of rediculous to close a hiking trail because people are overestimating their hiking abilities...
On the plus side the people who want to will still likely hike it. Probably with less traffic on the trail too

I’m of the opinion that they shouldn’t protect the idiots at the expense of everyone else

I’m guessing it’s a municipal or state trail? A lot of the areas I hike in get a handful of deaths every year, but I couldn’t imagine them ever being closed for that. It’s usually overuse that gets trails closed off here. It looks like there have been 3-4 deaths since 2013, which is pretty low for a lot of remote trails out here. There’s already been three deaths at the south rim of the Grand Canyon this year.
An old sign from a cool spot on Kauai.

At first I thought “shit, I gotta get there before Wednesday ” but it looks like the whole thing is game lands, so I guess I’ll just have to wait until small game or something and bring the shotgun along.

I agree, but I can see their reasoning. This is on state game lands, not a state park, managed by the game commission for hunters, paid for by hunting licenses. The game wardens aren’t park rangers, and shouldn’t have to waste their time policing/rescuing hikers. If anyone still wants to hike it, they just need to buy a hunting license and say their scouting or out for turkeys or something.

Seems like if peo ple are ignoring the signs then the trail is performing a public service and should remain open.

That is sad that people have died, but that is survival of the fittest. Sh ouldn’t close a trail because people are not careful enough.

Make sure you have a comfortable sling, because you need both hands and feet for several sections to climb up this trail.

Maybe I’ll take my revolver out for deer, though that’s later in the year than I might want

Before I went for the last time in December I didn’t remember it being that bad. When I got there though I was like “this sketchy AF. ”

It's been probably 6 or 7 years since I was last there. It may have deteriorated since then.
